Delta schools shutdown over non-payment of salaries for four months

Public primary and secondary schools in Delta state have been shut down following the declaration of an indefinite strike action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over alleged refusal by the state government to meet their sundry demands, including payment of primary school teachers salaries.
A primary school teacher in Ozoro, Isoko North local government area of the state, told NAIJ.com that for four months the state government has not paid their salaries, hence they live on borrowing to meet their daily needs.

Most of the state owned primary and secondary schools visited by NAIJ.com on Thursday, March 09, 2017 were securely locked while students and pupil who had no prior knowledge of the strike action were left stranded as it was a big task going back home on discovering that the schools were under lock and key.
The schools visited include West End Mixed Secondary School, Zappa Basic Secondary School, Government Model School, Uzoigwe Primary School and Women Affairs Nursery and Primary all in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
When contacted on phone, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Jonathan Jemirieyigbe, decried the lackadaisical attitude of the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa led administration in handling matters relating to both secondary and primary school teachers in Delta state.
Jemirieyigbe said: “We are on indefinite strike commencing from today. Our primary school teachers’ salaries from December, January and February have not been paid till date. We also have the issue of non -implementation of promotion released for primary and secondary schools since October 2016.
